Game Show Network should have a permanent oldies block with Sony-owned game shows

Presumably after Christmas 2022, Game Show Network should have a permanent oldies block with classic game shows owned by its parent company of Sony Pictures. The Sony-owned classic games were originally produced by Merv Griffin, Barry & Enright Productions, and Chuck Barris Productions.

Game Show Network is currently stunting with an oldies block of four of the same game shows that air on BUZZR, owned by Fremantle: Press Your Luck starring Peter Tomarken, Super Password, Card Sharks starring Jim Perry, and Family Feud starring Richard Dawson from the 70s and 80s.

Maybe after Christmas, Game Show Network should replace the four Fremantle classics with a full hour of classic nighttime Wheel of Fortune starring Pat Sajak and Vanna White at 1 and 1:30PM Eastern Time, and a full hour of Jeopardy starring Alex Trebek at 2 and 2:30PM. Game Show Network would be a happier channel if they air a two-hour block of old Wheel and Jeopardy episodes.

The history of (Starz) Encore

Step back in time to April 1, 1991, when the television landscape was forever changed with the launch of Encore. Founded by John Sie, this premium cable network burst onto the scene with an opening ceremony that set the stage for what would become a beloved platform for movie enthusiasts.

As Encore made its debut, viewers were treated to hosted segments that added a personal touch to movie presentations. While the first host remains unconfirmed, it is believed that Allison Sie, the daughter of founder John Sie and a member of the "Seven Sies," may have been one of the inaugural hosts. This personal connection to the network's leadership added a unique element to the viewing experience and set Encore apart from other cable networks.

Over the years, Encore underwent rebrands and logo changes, evolving alongside shifts in audience preferences and industry trends. The introduction of more recent hit movies expanded its appeal while maintaining a focus on films released between 1960 and 1989. As the network continued to adapt and grow, it eventually rebranded as "The New Encore" before ultimately becoming Starz Encore.

One particularly intriguing aspect of Encore's history is its connection to specific films and personalities. For example, Allison Sie appeared in the 1998 film "Enemy of the State," which later found a home on Encore's programming lineup. This intersection between talent and content added an extra layer of excitement for viewers tuning in to see their favorite movies.

Its ability to adapt while staying true to its core mission of showcasing compelling films is a testament to its enduring appeal.

Today, Starz Encore continues to delight audiences with a diverse range of multiplex channels catering to different genres and interests. From drama enthusiasts to fans of true stories, there's something for everyone within the Starz Encore family.

So whether you're reminiscing about classic movies from decades past or discovering new favorites through Starz Encore's curated lineup, take a moment to appreciate the legacy of this iconic cable network.
